Our story

Fifty years of Sunday pots on one creek.

Muddies & Tinnies is a family boat shed on Cabbage Tree Creek, run by an ex-fisheries officer who grew up potting these exact mangroves with her granddad.

"Measure every one. Throw the jennies back. Leave it better than you found it." — Col Tunstall, 1938–2016

TINNIE HIRE ✶ CRAB POTS ✶ SHORNCLIFFE QLD ✶ EST. 2021 ✶

Every Sunday from about 1975 until his knees gave out, my granddad Col took his old tinnie up Cabbage Tree Creek with four pots and a frozen mullet. From the time I was six I went with him. He taught me to read the tide off the mangrove roots, to tell a buck from a jenny by the flap, and to never, ever keep an undersized crab "just this once".

I ended up turning that into a career. I spent twelve years as a Boating & Fisheries Patrol officer, checking eskies and measuring crabs from Bribie down to the Gold Coast Seaway. Most people I pulled up weren't trying to break the rules. Nobody had ever shown them how. Hire places would hand over a boat and four pots with no gauge, no tags and no idea.

"Most people weren't trying to break the rules. Nobody had ever shown them how."

In 2021 Merv, who'd run the boat hire on Allpass Parade since the '90s, decided he was done. I bought his shed, six tired tinnies and his phone number, re-floored the boats and put new four-strokes on every one. Then I built the business I wished existed when I was writing tickets: tinnies that come with properly rigged, tagged pots, a real briefing, and someone who'll ring you the night before to say "come an hour earlier, the low's moved."

We're a small crew, we're tide-obsessed, and we still measure every crab at the dock. Come and see us.

How we got here

The shed, by the years.

  • 1975

    Col's first Sunday pots

Col Tunstall buys a second-hand 12-foot tinnie and starts potting Cabbage Tree Creek every weekend. He keeps a logbook of every catch for 41 years.

  • 2009

    Bec joins Fisheries Patrol

After a marine science degree at the University of Queensland, Bec joins the Queensland Boating & Fisheries Patrol and works Moreton Bay for twelve years.

  • 2021

    Muddies & Tinnies opens

Bec buys Merv's boat-hire shed on Allpass Parade with six boats. The first booking is a dad and two kids from Aspley, and they get three keepers.

  • 2023

    Catch & Cook launches

The pontoon gets a gas steamer and the skippered Catch & Cook trip is born. It's still the most-reviewed thing we do.

  • 2025

    Eight boats, online booking

"Second Pull" joins the fleet. Bookings move online with tide-matched launch times, and the whiteboard by the phone finally retires.

The crew

Three people and a lot of rope.

BT

Bec Tunstall

Owner & skipper

Ex-Fisheries Patrol officer, holds a Coxswain Grade 1 ticket, and sixth-generation Sandgate. Runs every Catch & Cook and most of the bookings. Will absolutely measure your crab twice.

TM

Tama Moana

Weekend skipper

A Redcliffe local and former Volunteer Marine Rescue crew member. Runs the Dusk Pot Runs and referees Bucks on the Bay with a whistle he takes very seriously.

JD

Jonno Doyle

Mechanic & dock hand

Keeps eight outboards purring and the pontoon in one piece. If you hit a sandbar, he's the one who'll come and get you, with a grin.

How we run the shed

Three rules from Col's logbook.

01

Measure every one.

Every kit has a gauge. Every keeper gets checked at the dock. No "she'll be right".

02

Leave the mangroves better.

Each boat carries a rubbish bag. We run a creek clean-up on the first Sunday of every month, and anyone who joins gets a free hire.

03

Old boats, new motors.

The hulls are decades old and bulletproof. The outboards are new, quiet, low-emission four-strokes.

Clouds over Bramble Bay and Sandgate

Come pot the creek with us.

Self-drive or skippered. Weekday mornings are quieter, and the crabs don't know it's a Tuesday.
